Why do so many publishers and game devs spend a lot a money on getting a good game design document made? Ever wondered why? Here is why!

Game Design Documents are little docs that explain to the devs, the investors and the publishers about how the game will work and how it should be developed. More importantly, it give them an idea about the game and analyze whether it will sell well. Whether is is a $60 game or a free game, a game designer's job is to make sure that the game generates millions of dollars when marketed well.

The Content of a GDD

Inside a game design document, you will find exactly what is required to help sell digital products in the game. For premium or paid games, a game designer will add features inside the GDD which will help make a fantastic trailer. The devs can then showcase those features or market the concept of the game. Game Designers also know what kind of art style is required to attract store visitors and encourage them to hit the purchase button.

What a Game Design Document Cannot Do

A Game Design Document can contain a list of marketing strategies and marketing plans. Of course, it would be up to the devs, marketers, publishers or investors to spend money on marketing. A GDD is not something that you can show to someone that has no idea about game development. A person who is reading your GDD must know how the game dev industry works.

Flowcharts and Screens

A game design document may contain flowcharts, diagrams, concept arts, screenshots and game art. This will help the dev team organize the project well and arrange tasks. That way, the game dev team will always know what to do next when their current tasks are over.
