Game Design Study - Brain Dot's User Retention

Brain Dots is one of the most well designed games that I have ever played. I wish I could get my hands on the game design document of this game as it is really worth millions. They are doing what indie game devs that make free to play games should do. Brain Dots is deigned to retain users. It definitely retained me!

So how do they retain users?

1. The user feels rewarded for solving a problem

Most games are challenging. This game is rewarding. The game forced me to think about solving the problem in front of me. Each time I passed a level, I felt like I achieved something. I felt smarter.

2. Game is easy to play and relies on 2-3 basic mechanics

You can solve problems by using the weight of the drawn graphics or use them to guide the balls to connect with each other. The mechanics are easy to use, and the tutorial is very well designed. It is easy to play, but not easy to complete.

3. If you fail, it is your fault!

The game is easy to play but it forces you to think hard. You will fail multiple times! It won't be the game's fault however. It will be your fault! Your solution was wrong and that is why you failed!

That is the reason why I wanted to keep playing again and again. I hated failing! Every time i succeeded, I felt smarter!

Brain Dots is just one of the many free to play games that forces you to buy the 'No Ads' IAP, as ads genuinely seem like an interruption. Ads get in between you and the game and since this game managed to engage me, I will definitely hit that 'No Ads' button and purchase that IAP.
